AUBURN — A fire sprinkler in an Auburn Mall entrance ceiling next to JC Penney malfunctioned, closing off the vestibule for several hours Monday morning.

The sprinkler head froze and popped after a heating unit stopped working, dousing the area at the southwestern section of the mall with water, Fire Battalion Chief David Richard said.

Temperatures plummeted below zero overnight Sunday. 

No injuries or property damage were reported.
