The French people in Lewiston, Westbrook, Biddeford and other points in this state are to be appealed to by the commanding officer of a French regiment now forming in Canada, to show their interest in the body itself and in the cause. They will be asked to take a special interest in the Frenchmen who will go to the front from Canada, and to show it in the best possible way by giving material assistance. The commander has been recruiting men rapidly and his success has demonstrated that the French-speaking people of Canada are loyal to king and colors.

(PHOTO CAPTION) Young Jeff Lever, son of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Lever Jr. of 18 Marble St., Lewiston, checks the weather forecast on this apparatus in the window of the People’s Savings Bank, during the height of Friday’s blustering northeast snow storm. The forecast indicated is “unsettled.” The result: More than a foot of new snow! Unsettled probably meant the way people felt.

The Lewiston Planning Board Tuesday will begin reviewing the first project in which it may use its authority to award conditional-use permits to large projects. James Day seeks the board’s permission to convert a horse barn into additional bowling lanes and an indoor golf course at his Spare-Time Recreation bowling center at 729 Main St., formerly the Lewiston Raceway. In addition, Day plans to build a two-story structure to connect the existing bowling center and the golf-course building. On the first floor of the proposed building would be more bowling lanes, pool tables and a lounge. The second floor would serve as a function hall, according to plans.
