PORTLAND (AP) — The Maine Turnpike Authority says it will close the Gray and Cumberland service plazas beginning next week so renovations can take place.
The Portland Press Herald reports (http://bit.ly/1M4gT7M ) the plazas will be closed for nine weeks starting next Monday and will affect motorists and truckers heading north and south.
The Gray service plaza is located at Mile 59 northbound. The Cumberland plaza is at Mile 58 southbound.
Spokeswoman Erin Courtney says the Starbucks coffee shops there are being replaced by 24-hour Burger King restaurants.
Courtney says all services including gas pumps and sanitary facilities will be closed. That means there will be none available on the 77-mile-long stretch of turnpike between Kennebunk and West Gardiner.
She says they’re hoping the $3 million project will be finished by Memorial Day.
