DENMARK — Ross Daly, master of the Mediterranean lyra, and wife Kelly Thoma will perform a variety of contemporary modal music at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at the Denmark Arts Center.
The lyra is a bowed fiddle that has more than a dozen sympathetic strings.
Straying outside the box of Western scales, Daly encompasses a sound that almost transcends time by weaving strands from many different parts of the world.
“Modal music – music that’s based around tones or modes rather than Western scales – covers a region that stretches from the northwest of Africa to west China,” Daly explained. “All of those areas have things in common, and they’re all constantly changing and evolving.”
Cost is a suggested donation of $15.
