PORTLAND – The Portland premiere of a work by Maine composer Kevin Siegfried will be performed by Renaissance Voices of Portland as part of their holiday concert Saturday, Dec. 20. The concert will begin at 8 p.m. in the Chestnut Street Methodist Church, which is behind Portland City Hall.

The Siegfried piece is a contemporary setting of a 15th century carol, “There is no rose.” It will be sung by the 18-voice a capella ensemble. The Renaissance version, for all male voices, will be performed as well.

“Christmas with Renaissance Voices” will also include the Portland premiere of Dorothy Hindman’s “Incarnation” and feature motets and selections from the “Missa Secunda” of Hans Leo Hassler, as well as other works, both early and modern.

The ensemble, directed by Harold Stover, has been entertaining throughout Maine since 1994. Stover, a graduate of the Juilliard School, is organist and director of music at Woodfords Congregational Church.

He also is an instructor in music theory and composition at the Portland Conservatory of Music.
