AUBURN — The City Council will host an informational meeting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, to discuss traffic safety and vehicle access on Route 4 and the Lake Shore Drive intersection.
The meeting, which will be held in the Community Room at Auburn Hall, is an opportunity for city officials, Public Works employees and the Maine Department of Transportation to hear concerns and ideas from the public.
The MDOT has conducted a study to determine what improvements or alternatives could be implemented to increase safety.
A study done in 2001 found Route 4 to be a high-speed, high-traffic road with crashes more severe than similar rural highways. Residents, city officials and transportation experts all pushed for safety improvements, especially on the Auburn section of the road.
In 2012, a group of 26 people from the Lake Shore Drive neighborhood spoke at an Auburn City Council meeting about improving safety.
The city added a turning lane at the intersection with Lake Shore Drive in 2014, which significantly reduced the number of crashes.
City officials encourage people who frequently use Route 4 in the East Auburn area to attend the meeting.

Editor’s note: Story updated to reflect the crash rate fell after the turning lane at the intersection with Lake Shore Drive was added in 2014.
