ANSWER: Sun Spots just loves sharing good news, and the latest on Crescent Beach is that it has reopened for the 2016 season.

Crescent Beach, located on Taylor Pond in Auburn (on Chicoine Avenue, which is off Hotel Road), has been a favorite swimming and recreation spot in the region for decades and was missed by many locals and visitors when it did not open for the 2015 season (just do a quick search on Facebook and you can read about how sad people were that it was not open). Because the beach is privately owned, information about why it was closed in the first place is not readily available. Sun Spots did attempt to reach out to the owners, but has yet to hear back. Maybe they’ll read this and decide to clue Sun Spots readers in.

A few other local spots for swimming include Range Pond, a beautiful state park facility with beach and picnic areas located in neighboring Poland; No Name Pond in Lewiston is also a much-frequented spot; and just a little farther away is Outlet Beach on Sabbathday Lake in New Gloucester.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Friends of Tommy’s Feral Felines are always so generous to our kitty friends and another chance to help them is coming up. Tommy’s will be holding a combination yard sale and bottle drive, and we need both your recyclable bottles and cans as well as yard sale items.

The sale will be held on July 28, 29 and 30 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 700 Main St. in Greene across from Hurricane’s Café and Deli. The rain date is July 31.

Because Tommy’s does not have available storage area for donated items prior to the sale, we are asking that all donations be brought directly to the sale anytime after 9 a.m. on July 28 and 29 only. Tommy’s also requests that no clothing, bedding, books or large appliances be donated.

Tommy’s Feral Felines is an all volunteer, no kill organization, which receives no official funding and relies solely on the donations and the income generated by its fundraising events. Tommy’s staff works hard 365 days a year in all kinds of Maine weather to support abandoned cats that live a feral existence. In addition to feeding and sheltering the cats, Tommy’s provides spaying and neutering, vaccinations and other medical care to the animals, many of which are too many generations feral to be adoptable.

Monetary donations are also deeply appreciated. For further information or to make a donation, you can contact Norm Blais at (207) 240-8767, normblais@yahoo.com, or at P. O. Box 274, Greene, ME 04236. Tommy’s and all of their feral kitties thank you for your help. — Norm, Greene.
