BAR HARBOR (AP) — Park rangers say a New Jersey man has fallen to his death while trying to photograph the sunset at Acadia National Park in Maine.
Rangers said Tuesday that 68-year-old Mark Simon of Glen Ridge, N.J., fell 40 feet from a bluff between Sand Beach and Thunder Hole.
They say his wife flagged down a ranger Monday evening when Simon failed to return after leaving her inside a car on the Park Loop Road to take a photograph. Searchers located him but were unable to reach him before he was carried away by a rising tide.
Simon, a summer resident of Southwest Harbor, was unresponsive when the Coast Guard found him.
The National Park Service said the incident appears to be an accident but that it remains under investigation. An autopsy will be performed.
