For my money, the most interesting feature of the Sun Journal is the “Looking Back” feature, never more so than June 6 when, I learn, that Campus Avenue received a major maintenance upgrade and was called “one of the best thoroughfares in the city,” as of June 6, 1916.

I find that difficult to believe. That road needs more work right now, only 100 years after the improvement that was noted so glowingly. Go figure. Perhaps shoddy work was not unknown in the past century.

I have a suggestion — start a Looking Back feature for 200 years. Then, in 2116, readers could find out that Campus Trail, Campus Gulch, Campus Ravine or whatever it is called then, was once a street.

I sometimes wonder if the Bates College folks aren’t embarrassed to have visitors from away see their beautiful campus surrounded by streets that would shame a monk in Tibet or a Bering Sea walrus hunter.
