FARMINGTON — Franklin Community Health Network will host the annual Battle for Breast Cancer Tournament from 1 to 8 p.m. Saturday, July 16, at Thomas College in Waterville.
The tournament is a round-robin benefit field hockey event. Proceeds benefit the Martha B. Webber Breast Care Center, a Franklin Memorial Hospital program.
The tournament will feature seven central Maine high school field hockey teams: Skowhegan, Spruce Mountain, Messalonskee, Mt. Bue, Lawrence, Mt. View and Winslow. Also featured are three middle school teams: Skowhegan, Mt. Blue and Spruce Mountain.
Team members are currently raising money in their communities through car washes, bottle drives, T-shirt sales and athletic clothing sales.
Cost is $5 for adults, $2 for students.
“All funds raised will be used for working or retired people seeking health care at the Martha B. Webber Breast Care Center who are uninsured or underinsured,” said Jill Gray, community relations and development manager. “The funds raised at last year’s event alone helped 105 women pay out-of-pocket expenses for breast care-related services. This money provides an invaluable opportunity to save lives through the use of early detection, and through assistance with other diagnostic and treatment costs.”
Prior to the tournament, the players are learning about mammograms and breast cancer through discussions with breast cancer survivors and breast care center staff.
