HAMPDEN — Authorities say an elderly woman was killed in a wrong-way crash in Hampden, adding to several motor vehicle fatalities in Maine over the weekend.
Police say the crash happened Sunday night on U.S. Route 202. They say the woman was driving the wrong way and hit another car head-on.
She was pronounced dead at the scene. Four other people were injured. Police say they’re all expected to survive. No one was immediately identified.
Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
State police say at least five other people have died in four separate car crashes over the weekend. Five of the six people killed during the weekend were not wearing seatbelts, according to state police.
On Sunday morning, Giovanni Mykel Ebon-Burgess, 23, of Dorchester, Massachusetts, was killed in a crash on Interstate 95 in Medway. He was ejected from the front seat of the passenger vehicle.
Around 10 p.m. Saturday in Alfred, 31-year-old Joseph Barbarino of Alfred died when his car overturned several times on Mouse Lane.
Barbarino was thrown out the car’s rear window after it struck a ditch, overturned several times and came to rest against a tree.
Early Saturday morning in Indian Purchase, a couple from Millinocket died when their pickup truck went off Golden Road and came to rest down a steep embankment.
The couple, 44-year-old Kevin Baker and 50-year-old Julie Columbo, were killed in the wreck.
Troopers say speed and alcohol were factors in the crash. Baker was believed to be the driver. The crash was reported around 12:30 a.m. Saturday.
And late Friday night in Perham, 29-year-old Kyle Goding of Perham , was killed when his mini-van overturned several times off Route 228. Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash.
