WESTBROOK — A paper company is asking federal regulators to approve a proposal that calls for removing a dam and other changes along a Westbrook, Maine, river in hopes of restoring fish populations and attracting whitewater kayakers.
The Portland Press Herald reports the agreement filed on Tuesday with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission calls for removing two dam spillways on the Presumpscot River. A ladder-like fish passage system would be installed and some parts of the river bottom would be reconfigured to ease upstream passage for fish.
Sappi North America applied to surrender its license to operate the Saccarappa Dam hydroelectric facility. The federal commission can approve that request.
The company declined to comment on the agreement.
City officials couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
