RUMFORD — The Board of Selectmen reappointed Tom Bourret as General Assistance clerk Thursday.
He was named to the post about one year ago, and board Chairman said Jeff Sterling said Bourret’s performance has “gone exceedingly well.”
When Bourret took the job, General Assistance appointments were cut back to two days a week, resulting in less money being spent on General Assistance in Rumford and Mexico, which contracts for the service.
The General Assistance program provides residents with help for basic needs and essential services.
Bourret cautioned the board an uptick in GA cases could be expected over the winter months, which is typical.
Bourret’s term as General Assistance agent coincides with his term as tax collector, which ends June 30, 2018, Sterling said. Bourret was elected tax collector in June 2016.
In other business, the board:
• Approved an additional 1,000 cubic yards of winter sand from Knox Loam & Gravel, which was earlier approved for 2,000 cubic yards. Owner Kevin Knox informed Town Manager John Madigan that after delivering the approved amount, there was room for more.
Madigan told the board the town usually purchased 6,000 cubic yards of sand, but they cut back this year because they had some left. He said there’s money in the budget for the extra sand.
“We want to be prepared for whatever happens,” Sterling said.
• Voted 4-1 to approve the sale of the Park Department’s 2001 Dodge pickup to Kevin Cormier for $350.
• Approved the sale of Fire Engine 2 for $1,500 to Kevin Geroux of Bradley.
Fire Chief Bob Chase said the quote was received after deadline but it was the only one received. The truck has been out of service since 2008. He said Geroux, a fire apparatus enthusiast, owns an old fire station in Bradley.
• Decided to solicit bids again for the fire station drain installation. Chase said they received one bid, but it was too high.
• Approved a permit for the Christmas in the Valley Parade on Friday, Dec. 9.
