LISBON — A strong all-around showing led the Monmouth Academy girls to victory at a nine-school track and field meet at Lisbon High School on Tuesday.

The Mustangs racked up 158.5 points, more than 30 points ahead of runner-up Cony’s 127. Lisbon took third (93.5), and Mt. Abram came in fifth with 59 points.

Cony was the boys’ champion with 117.5 points, while Lisbon came in second with 90 and Boothbay was third with 56. Monmouth (36) took fifth and Mt. Abram (27) was sixth.

The Monmouth girls were particularly strong in the throws, claiming the top three spots in the discus, three of the top five in the javelin and two of top five in the shot put.

Mahala Hayden (80 feet, 4 inches) won the discus, followed by teammates Emmeline Wiley (75-04) and Abbey Allen (75-01). After fourth-place Hailey Fenwick of Mt. Abram, the Mustangs had the next three spots: Maddie Amero, Delaney Wiley and Destiny Clough.

Amero won the javelin with a 107-01, which she said was a season-best.

“This year, that was my farthest, so far,” Amero said. “I am progressing.”

Amero, a junior, also placed third in the triple jump (28-11).

“She tore her knee apart, she didn’t compete last year,” Monmouth coach Tom Menendez said. “So this is her comeback season.”

Allen was third in the javelin, Hayden took fourth and Clough came in fifth.

Lisbon’s Alika McMurrin (29-02.5) won the shot put, but Monmouth racked up some points with Clough’s second-place finish and Hayden’s tie for fourth.

Allen also had the meet’s best high jump, a 4-10, and Emily Grandahl was second in the triple jump.

Kaitlyn Hunt earned points for Monmouth by taking second in the 3,200-meter run and third in the 1,600.

Mustangs hurdlers Grandahl and Libby Clement fared well against some of Class C’s best.

Grandahl was second and Clement fourth the 100 hurdles.

“(Grandahl) did good in the 100, that’s her strength,” Menendez said. “And Libby did real well, she was 18-flat, which is a season’s best for her right now.”

Wiscasset’s Ayanna Stover took first, and Lisbon’s Chase Collier came in third after stumbling over one of the final hurdles.

Collier, who’s been battling a hamstring injury, took a quick lead in the 300 hurdles and held it through the finish line, finishing in 52.70 seconds.

“I don’t know if it was my best time, but, definitely, I pushed myself from the beginning,” Collier said.

“I was in Lane 4, so I knew there were some girls behind me that were probably going to try to catch up. When I’m in the middle lane or the outside lane, I try to get a good start because running the corners can be hard sometimes.”

Clement came in second, Stover was third and Grandahl took fourth. Another Monmouth hurdler, Anna Lewis, placed fifth.

Monmouth’s Tori Spencer took first and set a personal record (8:42.39) in the 1,600 racewalk.

Mt. Abram’s Risa Marble won the girls’ 200-meter dash with a time of 29.56 seconds. Teammate Alice Cockerham placed fourth. Cockerham also had a second-place showing in the 100.

Lisbon’s Sydney Douglass and Cony’s Dani Brox tied for the best pole vault (7-0).

Douglass also finished second in the 1,600 racewalk and the 800-meter run.

Michael Schlotterbeck and Kurtis Bolton had the Lisbon boys’ two first-place showings.

Schlotterbeck won the 1,600 racewalk by a wide margin, finishing in 8:02.61.

“I’ve had better. Last Tuesday, I was about 10 or so seconds faster,” Schlotterbeck said.

“The wind did not help,” he later added. “Coming around that corner right there, it just slams into you.”

Teammate Alan Lavoie (8:289.58) was a distant second, but was second nonetheless, and Geoffrey Shambarger and Corbin Hall added points for the Greyhounds by finishing fourth and sixth, respectively.

Bolton won the 400 with a time of 53.80 seconds.

Monmouth quartet Evan Burnell, Dylan Goff, Kyle Gunnells and Dylan Lajoie took first in the boys’ 4×800 relay, finishing in 9:22.12.

Zack Wallace won the shot put for the Mustangs. His throw of 40-11.5 was more than four feet longer than Boothbay’s Connor Demmons’ 36-09.5.

Monmouth’s Ethan Thombs won the javelin with a throw of 129-09.

Xavier Romanoski earned two top-threes for Mt. Abram, placing second in the 3,200 and third in the 1,600.
