Though Maine has suspended the license of Lewiston oral surgeon Jan Kippax, he is still a dentist in good standing in two other New England states.
It is not clear whether he is doing any dentistry in the other states where he’s legally entitled to work. Both list his address in Lewiston.
Massachusetts and Vermont list Kippax as having an active dental license with no indication that he’s in trouble in Maine for alleged incompetence and other lapses.
Vermont disciplined him in 2003, but details of that case are unavailable. The case was closed in 2004.
The Maine Board of Dental Practice suspended Kippax’s license last month after an investigation into complaints from 18 patients during the past couple of years. It said that letting him continue to practice “in his reckless and harmful way” would cause patients “to suffer dire consequences.”
A hearing is slated for March 10 to determine whether to discipline Kippax and potentially pull his license. His suspension ends March 17 if no action is taken.
Former patients have accused Kippax of pulling teeth without a reason, refusing to provide painkillers during surgery and failing to do anything to stop bleeding.
Kippax has had a Vermont dental license since 1998. His current license there expires Sept. 30.
He’s had a Massachusetts license since 1985, the year he graduated from dental school at Boston University. His current license is good for another year and there’s no record of any disciplinary action there.
Kippax appears to have done the bulk of his professional work for many years at his Androscoggin Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons office on Main Street, which describes itself as “a surgical group practicing all forms of modern oral and maxillofacial surgery.”
But he has performed dentistry in other Maine localities in the past, former patients have said.
According to a biography on his business website, Kippax grew up in Maine and graduated from Gray-New Gloucester High School.
He has practiced in Lewiston since 1990 and has provided oral and maxillofacial trauma services to Central Maine Medical Center.
Kippax lives in Turner “and his hobbies are anything to do with dogs, four-wheeling, skiing and diving as well as serving on the Board of Directors of the Lewiston-Auburn Kennel Club, actively supporting various animal humane societies in the state and is a member of the Great Pyrenees Club of America,” according to his website.
