Book group offering bibliotherapy
RUMFORD — In conjunction with the Dempsey Center in Lewiston, the Rumford Public Library will be holding a Spring Book Discussion Group for those who are experiencing cancer or other illnesses.
Bibliotherapy, or book therapy, can have a therapeutic effect and can improve the quality of life for persons suffering from life-limiting illnesses.
The group will meet from 9 to 11 a.m. Mondays, March 27, April 24 and May 22.
The book will be “Leaves Falling Gently” by Susan Bauer-Wu, Ph.D., R.N., and copies are available at the library. Space is limited, and sign-up is required.

Kids’ ice fishing derby
POLAND — Range Pond State Park will host a kids’ ice fishing derby from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 4, at 26 State Park Road.
Admission to the derby will cost $1.50 for adults and youth ages 13 to 64; all others are free.
The first 500 children ages 12 and younger and first 100 Special Olympic entrants who register by 10 a.m. will receive a free ice fishing trap.
The water will be freshly stocked with trout. There will be a food truck and warming shelter.

Scheduling meeting for future freshmen
FARMINGTON — A scheduling information meeting for parents and guardians of eighth grade students going to Mt. Blue Campus next school year will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 8, at the Bjorn Auditorium at Mt. Blue Campus.
‘The Botany of Apples’
PARIS — Dan Cousins of Pietree Orchard will be the speaker at the Wednesday, March 8, McLaughlin Garden lecture.
His topic will be “The Botany of Apples” and will cover odd and fun aspects of pomeculture.
Cousins, the general manager at Pietree Orchard in Sweden, has more than 20 years of experience in fruits, vegetables and perennials. He has worked researching plants at Cornell University.
The Wednesday lectures are at 4 p.m. upstairs in Bernard McLaughlin’s historic home, 97 Main St. Tea begins at 3:30 p.m. There is no fee; donations are requested.
Story hour at New Sharon library
NEW SHARON — The Jim Ditzler Memorial Library will hold a story hour from 10:30 11:30 a.m. Thursdays, March 9 and 23.
There will be stories, crafts and snacks.

SeniorsPlus satellite office hours
FARMINGTON — SeniorsPlus will hold office hours for its satellite office location at 218 Fairbanks Road in Farmington.
Office hours for scheduled appointments will be from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Visitors will need to call 1-800-427-1241 to schedule an appointment.
Walk-in hours will be held from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of every month. Staff will be on hand to answer any questions or concerns community members may have about services and resources for older adults and adults with disabilities and their families. These services are free and open to the public.

Whitman Library games, socializing
BRYANT POND — Whitman Memorial Library will offer cabin fever relief with an afternoon of games, cards, coloring and socializing at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 9.
Those attending may contribute their own activities. The event is open to the public at no charge, and light refreshments will be served.
If school is canceled SAD 44, there will not be a program.
Rumford Area Quilters to meet
RUMFORD — Rumford Area Quilters will meet Thursday, March 9, at 1 p.m. at the Rumford United Methodist Church, Linnell Street.
A demonstration on piecing “Majestic Mountains” will be presented.
All area quilters are welcome.
