RUMFORD — Nick Newman and Curtis Gauvin have Mountain Valley in third place after the first day of the Class B boys’ Alpine skiing state championships.

Newman had the best showing of Tuesday’s giant slalom competition at Black Mountain of Maine. Newman skied his first run of the day in 46.76 seconds and his second in 47.66 seconds, for a total time of 1:34.42.

Gauvin’s two giant slalom runs added up to 1:43.86, which has him in fifth place heading into the second day of state championships Wednesday, again at Black Mountain.

Maranacook’s Nathan Delmar was the only other skier, along with Newman, to finish runs in faster than 50 seconds. Delmar’s times were 49.74 and 48.83 seconds for a total of 1:39.57.

Delmar and two other top-20 showings have the Black Bears in first place after one day with 50 points. Robbie McKee (1:45.49) is seventh for Maranacook, and Liam McNamara (1:46.80) is 13th.

Fort Kent is second with 52 points, and Mountain Valley is third with 59. Greenville (61 points) and Yarmouth (81) round out the top five. Gray-New Gloucester (122) is seventh, Spruce Mountain (183) is ninth and Telstar (190) is 10th.

Winthrop’s two skiers both finished in the top 10: Maguire Anaszewski is fourth (1:42.83), and Charles Dehass is ninth (1:45.50).

Greely’s John Watt is third, in between Delmar and Anaszewski, with a combined time of 1:41.74. His teammate, Anthony Mason, is sixth (1:43.95).

Completing the top 10 in the giant slalom are Fort Kent’s Bryce Madore (seventh, 1:44.21) and Drew Madore (1:45.63).

Mountain Valley’s Jon Adley is in 12th place, Mt. Abram’s Machaon Henderson is 15th and Gray-New Gloucester’s Kyle Mercier finished the day in 20th.

Phoenix girls in fourth

High first-day finishes by Allison Acritelli and Bailey Coates have Spruce Mountain in the fourth position after the first day of the Class A girls Alpine skiing state championships at Black Mountain on Tuesday.

Acritelli, with a combined time of 1:42.25, finished the giant slalom portion of the state championships with the sixth-fastest time.

Coates was seventh with a combined time of 1:44.00.

Yarmouth leads after Day 1 with 33 points. Maranacook is second with 52 points, Fort Kent is third with 54.

After Spruce Mountain is Greenville (82 points), John Bapst (84), Mt. Abram (117) and Telstar (148).

Greenville’s Shellby Cowin heads into Wednesday’s slalom competition in first place. She recorded times of 47.08 and 47.31 seconds for a total of 1:34 in the giant slalom Tuesday.

Yarmouth’s Margaret Elder (1:38.45) is second, Maranacook’s Rachel Tooth (1:39.39) is third, Fort Kent’s Alisha Guimond (1:39.62) is fourth and John Bapst’s Annina Breen (1:40.43) is fifth.

Other area skiers in the top 20 are Spruce’s Julia Pomeroy (14th), Mt. Abram’s Emma Berube (16th) and Mountain Valley’s Ellie Leduc (19th).
