Should Poland Spring forget about Rumford, just as other businesses have?
Should Poland Spring find another place where it would be more welcomed?
It is my belief that if the water is monitored closely, the water source won’t run dry. If the contract is written good enough to please both sides, it will work.
Poland Spring’s proposed well might be of some help to Rumford. The town’s aging water lines and its declining economy could get a boost. Taxpayers might get some relief.
There would be many trucks hauling water, and the drivers would need fuel and places to eat. Some job openings would be gained from it. Businesses would get more business and others would come.
Some people are worried, and they have a right to be concerned but, once again, if the contract is worded well, Rumford should benefit from it.
Years ago, when I was a selectman, it was difficult to get businesses to come here. That is still true today. I said it then and I will say it again, Rumford is not business friendly.
Looking around town, most people have decided that “no” is the answer, regardless of any agreement.
For others, like myself, we sit hopeless and watch the decline play out.
In the end, Poland Spring probably will find another place where it will be welcomed.
Through all of this, I thank the Water District Committee and staff for the hard work they are doing.
