ANSWER: Happy to get the word out, Jan. These are wonderful events that offer many treasures and are a true help to veterans.
For those of you who don’t know, AMVETS is an organization that’s been around since 1944 and is made up of active duty and honorably discharged veterans from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard, and the National Guard and Reserves. You do not need to be a combat veteran to join.
The group was established by World War II veterans and chartered by Congress to assist veterans in all aspects of their lives, from filing disability claims to finding jobs. Funding these efforts is why the flea market and other events are so important.
AMVETS stands for AMerican VETerans.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: Before anyone gives away a World War II paratrooper parachute, they should know what they are worth.
The main chutes are $500 and the smaller reserve chutes are $300 to $400.
Thank you.
— George Mattor, Roxbury
ANSWER: That’s a good point, George. Although, we get the sense that the people who have written to give away parachutes are really interested in sharing a prized possession that someone else could make use of.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: Friends of Tommy’s Feral Felines are always so generous to our kitty friends and another chance to help them is coming up.

Please, no clothing, bedding, books or large appliances.
