NORWAY — Town Manager Dennis Lajoie told the Board of Selectmen Thursday evening that the Opera House clock has been reset and will only ring during the hours of 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
A resident who lives near the clock brought up the issue of the clock ringing at night at the board’s July 6 meeting.
Resident Erica Jed, owner of Books N’ Things at 430 Main St., said that the Opera House clock was ringing during night hours.
Jed, who lives above the bookstore, said that the clock ringing at night was disruptive, and that she believed it violates the town’s noise ordinance.
She said that until the end of June, the Opera House clock did not ring at night, but after a thunderstorm, it began ringing at odd times, including after 10 p.m.
Lajoie said that he spoke with Jim Bryant of Wayne, with whom Norway has an annual maintenance contract, and asked if he could regulate the clock so that it chimes from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Bryant agreed to look at the clock and climbed up the tower on July 10 to reset it.
In other business, a brief special town meeting was held at the start of Thursday’s board meeting, where a handful of residents voted in favor of appropriating money to cover overdrafts in the town’s Police Department and General Assistance accounts.
The first article asked residents if they wished to appropriate $17,140 from the unrestricted fund balance to cover overdrafts in the Police Department caused by increases in health insurance and increases to overtime.
The second article asked residents if they wished to appropriate $3,448 from the unrestricted fund balance to cover overdrafts in General Assistance caused by an increase in hours for the program’s director.
Both articles were unanimously approved by the residents at Thursday’s board meeting.
