CUMBERLAND (WGME) — Police say a manager at convenience store in Cumberland was providing alcohol to minors and overcharging them for it.
Between May 12 and early August, police investigated the actions of a clerk at the Irving Express Mart located at 174 Main Street in Cumberland.
“For quite some time, the Police Department has been receiving anonymous reports of illegal alcohol and tobacco sales at this business. Our department undertook this operation in an effort to determine if there was, in fact, a pattern and practice of illegality which could serve to place our community’s youth at risk,” Cumberland Police Chief Charles Rumsey said in a press release.
As a result of the investigation, the Irving Express Mart’s manager, 63-year-old Kazi Nazrul Islam, of Portland, received a criminal summons for furnishing liquor to certain persons prohibited.
Police say he sold alcohol to an underage person “outside the scope of his employment,” which means he charged more for the product than normal.
Islam allegedly charged the minor $60 for a six pack of Twisted Tea and a small bag of chips.
Police say that the practice of overcharging minors for liquor happened multiple times.
