LEWISTON — The Lewiston Police Department will launch its next “Citizens’ Police Academy” on Tuesday, Sept. 5. The 10-week program of classes will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. each Tuesday at the Lewiston Police Department.

The program provides insight into the various department operations. The instructors will be sworn Lewiston officers and representatives from non-police agencies. The instructors will provide information concerning their particular areas of the profession. The curriculum is frequently updated to stay current.

It is an opportunity for applicants to learn about the department and for the department to learn about the concerns of community members.

This is not a police officer training school and it is not an open forum to discuss previous law enforcement contacts or grievances. All discussions will be held with respect to the class-time schedule.

Class size will be limited to 22 people, and preference will be given to Lewiston residents. Only those able to make full a commitment to the class should apply. An 80 percent attendance rate is required to successfully complete the academy and to receive a certificate of completion.

A background check will be conducted on all applicants, and those with felony convictions or extensive criminal backgrounds will not be accepted. All applicants should be at least age 18.

Applications must be returned by Monday, Aug. 28, to the Lewiston Police Station, emailed to jphilippon@lewistonmaine.gov or mailed to Lewiston Police Department, 171 Park St., Lewiston, ME 04240, Attn: Officer Joseph Philippon.
