MEXICO — A young boy was presented with the 911 Award from Med-Care Ambulance on Thursday for demonstrating a cool head and quick thinking during a medical emergency at home.
Marq Macleod, 8, called 911 on July 31 because his soon-to-be stepfather, Matthew Lennon, appeared to be hallucinating and said that “seals were dancing in the sink.”
According to Marq’s grandparents Marilla and Kennith Couch Jr., Marq first tried to call his mother, Mara Smith, who was at work, then his grandparents. He also put a message on Lennon’s Facebook page. When nobody answered the Facebook message, he called 911.
Not only did Marq give the dispatcher directions to his home, but he also gave Lennon sips of Mountain Dew, suspecting he was low on sugar.
After help arrived, Marq continued to assist first responders by answering questions. According to those who assisted at the scene, Marq remained calm and brave.
Dean Milligan, director and chief of Med-Care ambulance, said Marq made a “critical difference in the health and well-being” of Lennon.
Lennon said he had not had a lot of sleep that week and was dehydrated and exhausted.
“Marq always has a very logical thought process,” Lennon said.
The young hero said he knew to call 911 because of the list of emergency numbers his mother keeps.
“He’s such a fast learner,” Smith said.
