MONMOUTH — The Monmouth Community Players are excited to present Neil Simon’s comedic masterpiece “Barefoot in the Park.” This production is directed by Ray Fletcher of Monmouth. Cindy Dunham of Winthrop is the producer.

Paul and Corie Bratter (Danny Gay of Lewiston and Megan Record of Monmouth) are newlyweds in every sense of the word. He is a straight-as-an-arrow lawyer and she is a free spirit always searching for the newest trend. Team this relationship with an overpriced and under-performing New York apartment, a nosy mother-in-law (Charlotte Morin of Lewiston), an eccentric “upstairs” neighbor (Charlie Cole of Portland), a very funny telephone company man (Tim MacLeod of Auburn), and a delivery man (David Marshall of Monmouth), and the audience is in for a delight.

Also along for the ride are some of Neil Simon’s funniest jokes and gags, perfectly meted out over the course of the evening so that even 53 years later everything feels fresh and funny.

When it premiered on Broadway in 1963, “Barefoot in the Park” was an instant hit, running for more than 1,500 performances, a record run for a non-musical play. Written as a tribute to Simon’s first wife, the play focuses on the attractions between opposites and the steep learning curve in the early days of any marriage, 50 years ago or today. “Barefoot in the Park” is appropriate for teen and adult audiences.

“Barefoot in the Park” opens at Cumston Hall on Nov. 3 and continues with evening performances at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 4, 10 and 11. Matinee performances will be presented at 2 p.m. Nov. 5 and 12.

Tickets are $14 for general admission and $12 for students and seniors.
