SALEM — Tyson Hill and Dillan Wells scored a goal apiece as Mt. Abram notched its’ ninth win of the season with a 2-0 tilt over Carrabec in boys’ soccer action Saturday afternoon.

Denny Marble and Dylan Starbird added assists for Mt. Abram. The Roadrunners played a tough defensive game where the Cobras could only manage five shots on goal.

Goalie Brad Clark was outstanding in net with 12 saves for Carrabec, while goalies Nate Luce and Jack Deming combined for five saves for Mt. Abram in the winning effort.

Women’s soccer

Tufts 3, Bates 0

LEWISTON — Elizabeth Reed scored a pair of goals as Tufts University secured a 3-0 victory over Bates in women’ soccer action Saturday afternoon.

The Bobcats (6-5-1) and Jumbos (7-2-3) played to a scoreless tie in the first half. However, Tufts out-shot Bates 13-4, forcing senior captain Sarah McCarthy to make five saves in goal for Bates.

Backup keeper, freshman Katherine Nuckols, made a pair of saves following a McCarthy injury.

The Bobcats’ first shot on goal of the matchup came in the 26th minute when junior Sarah Gutch had a shot denied by Tuft keeper Emily Bowers. Bowers made six saves on the day to earn the win in net for the Jumbos.

College field hockey

Bates 1, Tufts 0

LEWISTON — The Bates field hockey team defeated No. 5 nationally ranked Tufts University 1-0 Saturday afternoon, the Bobcats’ second win over a top-five team this week and their first against the Jumbos since 2002.

Emma Patterson scored the only goal of the game for the Bobcats (6-5).

Neither team had much success penetrating the opposing side’s impressive defenses, and the game featured only 14 shots. The Jumbos (8-4) outshot Bates 8-6 and had a 6-2 advantage in penalty corners.

Women’s volleyball

Bates 3, Wesleyan 0

LEWISTON — The red-hot Bats volleyball team capped a 3-0 week by handing Wesleyan University its first NESCAC loss of the season, defeating the Cardinals (3-0) on Senior Day in Alumni Gymnasium.

Senior captain Jacqueline Forney posted 42 assists, 20 digs in a mammoth effort, setting up sophomore Taylor Stafford-Smith for 15 kills, freshman Angel Echipue for 13 and freshman Ruby Lightbourn for eleven.

The Bobcats (10-8) set the tone on the first play of the day, Echipue’s first of six kills in the set on nine attacks. Stafford-Smith attacked at a .429 rate and posted two blocks in a tense third set.

Men’s cross country

Bates wins Maine State Meet

BRUNSWICK — Four seniors earnd all-state honors for finishing in the top seven, leading the No. 21 nationally ranked Bates men’s cross country team to first place at the Maine State Meet Saturday at Bowdoin.

Bates had seven of the first 12 runners to cross the finish line, scoring 31 points to defeat host and runner-up Bowdoin by 11 points, and win the meet for the third time in four years.

Senior captain Zach Magin led Bates with a third-place finish out of 151 individuals, covering the 8-kilometer course in 25:45.1. Senior Matt Morris took fifth place (26:08.8), less than a second ahead of sixth-place Stephen Rowe in 26:09.6.

Close behind was senior captain Ben Tonelli in seventh place at 26:12.8. All four earned their first all-state honors.
