DEAR SUN SPOTS: Is there a veterinarian who makes house calls for general services for dogs in the Turner area? My dog is getting old and it’s hard to take him to the vet. He has hip troubles. When it’s time and he’s in too much pain I want him to go in peace, not in a strange place. I would want a veterinarian to put him down, if needed. Thank you so much for your column.

ANSWER: What a great question! Fortunately, there are veterinarians in the area who offer the services you’re looking for. I’m requesting that all my readers share their recommendations.
One such organization is Vet at Your Door in Gardiner, owned by Dr. Deidre Frey. She and her colleagues serve the greater Lewiston-Auburn area.
I had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Frey. She was very kind and totally understands why pet owners don’t want to put their furry friends through undue stress by carting them off to the vet, especially when they are older, frail, sick, or injured. Taking a pet to vet’s office can be stressful to the humans, too.
We all can relate to what it’s like to chase Kitty all through the house so we can stuff her in the carrier, or listen to Spot bark incessantly at all the other doggies in the waiting room!
Vet at the Door’s in-home services include both wellness visits complete with exams and vaccinations. They also provide diagnostics and treatment for sick and injured animals. Acupuncture is a more unique service they provide. They’ll assist with hospice care, and if a decision is made to euthanize, it can be done in the comfort and security of your home. To make an appointment and get more information, call 536-8387.
I’m sure there are other veterinarians who make house calls for various circumstances. I hope to hear from everyone and will add you to the rolodex.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: Are there any places that can use volunteers to serve meals on Thanksgiving? I’m interested in helping.

ANSWER: What a blessing you will be! There is a listing of soup kitchens at this website: https://goodfood4la.org/food-pantries-soup-kitchens/ and I’m sure everyone will be grateful for the help. One place is Hope Haven Gospel Mission at 209 Lincoln St. in Lewiston. They serve a Thanksgiving meal and definitely need volunteers. You can reach them at 783-6086.
