The Red Sox are coming to Maine.
They’re just not coming to Lewiston or Auburn.
We don’t mean to be too parochial, but what about us?
The World Series trophy will visit Portland on Dec. 17. Then it will make its way on a whistle-stop tour to Presque Isle, Bangor and Augusta on Dec. 18, including a public viewing at the Blaine House.
When, exactly, will the Twin Cities begin to get a little respect with things like this? The governor often touts our growth and economic development as a model for the state. Our cities are coming alive with public works that could become the envy of the state – just look at the Gateway project in Lewiston and the renovated Auburn Hall.
We’ve shown ourselves committed to libraries, schools and progress. And we’ve shown ourselves committed to the Boston Red Sox.
Fans from Lewiston and Auburn have suffered along with the rest of The Nation for 86 years. We have cheered, been disappointed but returned, year after year, hoping for a better day. Finally, that better day comes, yet we’re shut out.
Lewiston is Maine’s second-largest city, with about 36,000 people. Auburn adds another 23,000. And that doesn’t include the many towns that ring the cities.
The Red Sox entourage will go right past here on its way north and then again on its way back to Boston.
