TURNER — The Board of Selectmen voted unanimously Monday to raise the amount of the performance guarantee for Bob Harlow’s construction project on Big Bear Lane from $15,000, currently held in bond form, to $30,000. 

 

In a related vote, Selectman Angelo Terreri motioned that the original inspection escrow, which was $300, be raised to $600 to assist in covering growing inspection costs of Harlow’s road improvement project.

 

The project includes a retaining wall, which neighbors believe leans dangerously. Harlow does not want to absorb the cost of removing the wall and has submitted an appeal to the Planning Board.

 

A public hearing on the appeal will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8 at the Town Office.

 

In other business, selectmen could not agree on whether to build a sidewalk near the North Parish Road Bridge. Building and maintaining a sidewalk is a condition which must be met if the town wants to take advantage of improvements that the Maine Department of Transportation is willing to make to the bridge.

 

However, because there are not enough details for the selectmen to make a realistic estimate of building the sidewalk, the board will wait before committing to the project.

 

Fire Chief Rodney Guptill told the board his department answered 30 calls on Monday to clear debris after the powerful wind storm on Oct. 29 and 30.  

 

The board voted unanimously for the purchase a new reversible plow and accepted the lower of two bids, that of Viking Cives of Lewiston for $7,135. The old plow will be used on another truck.

 

The annual Turkey Dinner and Silent Auction will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, at Boofy Quimby Memorial Center, 96 Howes Corner Road. A traditional Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings will be served. There will be gift certificates and gift basket, wood pellet and 50-50 raffles.

 

Proceeds will go the Turner Rescue and Fire Department. Rescue Chief Lisa Bennett told selectmen that all the items up for auction have been donated. The money raised last year paid for most of the new power stretcher recently ordered. 

 

The board voted unanimously to renew Antigoni’s liquor license.

 

The next selectmen meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 20, at the Town Office.
