The rash of attacks on gay marriage is disturbing, the latest by a writer who if not homophobic, is definitely heterosexist – the right of heterosexuals to openly attack a group of people, as if sanctioned to do so. It appears heterosexuals, although I know some nice ones, are effectively damaging the sanctity of marriage on their own.

There are larger issues than legalizing the marriages of homosexuals prepared to formalize their commitment. Research shows children from same-sex households, where they are welcomed, planned and provided for, are well-adjusted, tolerant and have a greater understanding of the world around them.

Homosexuals are an easy target, a topic used to inflame, inspire fear and condemnation, a disappointing subject matter in an election year, predictable and tiresome.

Democracy is definitely in trouble in this country. The constant striving to look, feel and act the same is damaging our humanity and destroying diversity and creativity.

As to unelected judges, our unelected president’s vice president and Justice Antonin Scalia are a good example of officials to rein in. While focusing discontent on homosexuals, harm is being inflicted on others worldwide for unclear reasons. The appearance of impropriety is glaring.

How sad we use our great power to effect personal agendas and force our style of democracy on others. We have greater things to focus on, like tyranny within, shaming citizens into compliance, name-calling and bullying.

Free speech, pursuit of happiness, separation of church and state are all at risk.
