Gov. Baldacci and the Democrats want to fix the state’s budget deficit on the backs of the poor and diseased, Maine’s most vulnerable citizens. This Maine Democratic Party does not sound like the party that proudly has declared itself throughout the years as “the people’s party.”
The Sun Journal’s Jan. 27 article “Baldacci, hospitals clash,” relates the state’s proposed $8.7 million cut from MaineCare to Maine hospitals, on the backs of our most vulnerable citizens. This budget battle, which means a loss of millions more from the federal government, should be a major concern of all citizens.
If Gov. Baldacci and the Legislature are as concerned about health care for Maine citizens as they have often publicly declared, they must understand that hospital care fits neatly into that health care program.
My wife recently received the best possible care at the Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston and the Sandy River Rehabilitation Center in Farmington. I cannot praise enough the nursing personnel and physicians attending my wife during her recent stay at these facilities.
I want that type of care in our hospitals to continue for everyone. However, it will change if cuts are made in personnel and services by our hospitals to balance the state’s budget deficit.
We must not fix the state’s budget deficit on the backs of the Maine’s poor and diseased, the most vulnerable citizens.
I urge Gov. Baldacci and all legislators to take a stand on good health care for Maine.
