This is in response to the bear hunting referendum initiated by the Maine Citizens for Fair Bear Hunting. They are looking for support for their initiated referendum about bear hunting in Maine.
I have read their letter and have reviewed their Web site concerning their cause. I must say that, as a Maine hunter for over 30 years, I am appalled and disgusted with Maine Citizens for Fair Bear Hunting’s propaganda to eliminate any form of hunting bear in this great state. Many years of study and research by the Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife department biologist have concluded that the systems in place are the most effective means of controlling bear populations in this state.
The group’s misleading statements and use of emotional pictures and language to coerce the non-hunting and hunting public is only feeding more anti-hunting sentiment to the people of this state and from away. Not only is their organization and all members associated promoting anti-hunting sentiment, they are also trying to further depress the state’s economy by eliminating income generated by license fees paid to hunt bear by the legal means that have been established.
No anti-hunting organization spends its money to support wildlife conservation. Instead, it spends its money to advertise against all forms of legally established hunting and to pay salaries to its members to stop all hunting – period.
