I have been driving a school bus for 26 years. Our goal is to get every child to and from school safely. What we are confronted with every day on the streets is scary, and there is not much we can do but always drive defensively.
We are now having problems at McMahon school. They have decided to let the walkers out at the same time as the bus students. I have witnessed at least four incidents of children running to get to the parents’ car as buses are entering or leaving the yard. I was involved when a child tried to cross the street to his mother’s car. I had just started to move and was able to stop.
We also have to deal with parents trying to get in the yard in a hurry, cutting us off and holding up traffic.
Everything was going very well before school administrators took it upon themselves to let walkers out early.
A parent approached me after his children had run out between two busses and asked me what was going on. I told him that at least three calls had been made to the school about this problem and had been ignored.
What else can we do? Wait for some child to get hit?
