This is in answer to your editorial, “Voters should reject resort casino” and the opinion article on Question 1 (Oct. 12).
I agree with most of what was said, but it is too late. Lawmakers have left us. They have forgotten what they were elected to do: save Maine, decrease spending and property taxes, help small businesses, and end tax breaks for big companies and labor unions.
Is it too late for the state to wake up and accept change? I am afraid it is. Also, could we trust them to change? Not with their track record. They should have allowed a ballot question to see how the people felt and then taken it from there. Again, they don’t care what we think. They could have negotiated a better deal for all of us. They don’t care.
So, now we are forced with the casino question. My answer is a definite “yes.”
If we turn it down, the Legislature may not ever come around to think about Maine people and negotiate deals to improve our taxes, spending and education.
That’s also why on Question 1 is for none of the above. No matter what way you look at it, 1A and 1B will cut programs and services, raise taxes, make more bond issues and not be good for us.
We would not have had these questions on the ballot if the lawmakers had put politics aside and worked saving our great state.
