Envy, corruption and land grab: Does this sound like an old cliché from a western movie? Well folks, you can see it in action at the Auburn-Lewiston Airport Board of Directors meeting each month.

I will bring you up to date, in case you missed some of the show. You have likely heard that power breeds corruption. When a person has been in power for more than a few years, power has a way of attacking the human soul. This is more likely to happen if the person is not elected and is not required to answer to the electorate.

The Airport Board of Directors is an example of this. One fellow appointed to the board by the city of Lewiston has been on the board for more that 15 years. Don’t you think it is time for someone else to have a turn? I think a two-year term is more than adequate.

It would help protect the public interest from the corruption that can breed in men’s souls, if the board members were exposed to that power for not more than two years.

A petition was submitted to the Board at the last meeting calling for a two-year term limit, signed by a significant percentage of pilots and aircraft owners that use the airport. Others were favorable to the idea, but didn’t want to get on the bad side of the Airport Board.
