When we were recently asked to chair this year’s Tri-Valley United Way fund-raising drive, we welcomed the chance to play a small role in helping our local United Way meet its most ambitious goal ever — that of raising $400,000.

This goal was set in response to the needs of the 25 local United Way agencies that all provide vital assistance to our most disadvantaged neighbors and their families.

As our campaign is winding down, we have had a chance to witness the hard work of many volunteers in workplaces throughout Franklin County and Livermore Falls. We have also gotten to see, first-hand, the incredible generosity of hundreds of employees in those workplaces.

Between 85 and 100 percent of the workers at companies such as G.H. Bass, Forster Manufacturing, MBNA, Work First Inc. and Farmington Ford have participated in this year’s fund-raising drive. Many of these workers overlooked the fact that they might be living from paycheck-to-paycheck and still found a way to generously contribute.

The best news of all is that over 99 percent of their contributions will be spent right here in the Tri-Valley area.
