BETHEL – Gould Academy alpine skiers raced to a gold medal and a number of top ten finishes at the Junior III Olympics at Gore Mountain in North Creek, N.Y., from March 14-17. The four Gould racers were among the top 100 skiers in the eastern United States in the 13-14 age group.
“Our coaches knew going into the event that if our kids skied their game they could compete with the traditionally tough Vermont and New Hampshire skiers. In the end, people were talking about the skiers from Gould and Maine. We are very proud of them,” said Gould alpine coach Kurt Simard.
Freshman Mitch Grimmer of Lewiston took the gold medal in the slalom, out-racing Vermont’s Micheal Boardman by three-hundredths of a second.
Ninth-grader Jackson Keogh placed second in the Giant Slalom and sixth in Super G. Izzy Kannegieser of Minot, also a classmare of Grimmer and Keogh, finished seventh in Giant Slalom and sixth in the Super G.
All three qualified to represent the eastern United States at the K2 Canadian Championships at Silver Star Mountain Resort in British Columbia March 30-April 3. The K2 Championships host the top 170 ski racers from across Canada ages 13 and 14.
Other Gould students who raced at the J3 Junior Olympics included eighth-grader Jack Auty, who finished ninth in the Giant Slalom and 22nd in the Super G.
Amelia Brown finished 41st in the Slalom, 53rd in Giant Slalom, and 43rd in the Super G.
