LEWISTON — Hazel B. Hersom Sylvester, 98, of Lewiston, formerly of South Paris, died Sunday, Dec. 31, at St. Mary’s d’Youville Pavilion.

She was born in Chelsea on October 31, 1919, the daughter of Harry and Bertha Markhem Heath. Hazel was a homemaker and a very active member of the churches to which she belonged: Assembly of God in Brunswick and Oxford Hills Assembly of God. She enjoyed reading her Bible, praying, singing hymns and spending time with her family. She was married to William J. Hersom, who died in 1985. She later married Ernest Sylvester, who died in 1993.

Survivors include a son, Donald W. Hersom, and his wife, Linda, of Lewiston; a daughter, Laureen K. Verrill, and her husband, Stephen, of New Boston, N.H.; daughter, Barbara Hersom Buck, and a daughter-in-law, Karen Hersom, of Saco; grandchildren Donald A. Hersom, Sherri L. Marshall, Scott Ferland, Peter Ferland, Paul Ferland, David Ferland, Cherity L. Carleton, Faith A. Vincent, Joy S. Johnson, Hope R. Bourne, Chad S. Verril, Matthew Hersom, Micah Hersom, Jessie Payton and David Hersom,; 25 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen Poore, of Brunswick; and a brother, Kenneth Heath, and his wife, Susan, of Topsham; Ernest’s children: Ernest R. and David A. Sylvester and Rebecca Hinckley; and several nieces and nephews. Hazel was predeceased by a son, David Hersom; daughters Shirley Thibodeau and Rosemary Lamb; and by seven of her siblings.
