BETHEL — With three seconds left, Telstar’s Blake Rothwell hit his first of two free throws to cut the deficit to two. Rothwell was instructed to miss the second on purpose, and when he did Jarrett Brown got the rebound and laid it in as time expired to force overtime. From there, Telstar (3-7) would outscore Monmouth (2-8) 11-8 and finish with the 72-69 win on Wednesday in a Class C South boys basketball matchup.
Brown led the way for Telstar with 28 points, 13 boards and eight assists on the night. Rothwell finished with 19.
On Monmouth’s side, Brock Bates finished with 28 points including four 3s. Teammate Evan Burrell finished with 14 in the loss. Monmouth went 12-12 from the free throw line.
AR Gould 59, Buckfield 35
BUCKFIELD — Arthur R. Gould School charged to a 14-point halftime lead and finished strong to defeat Buckfield 59-35 on Wednesday in a boys’ basketball matchup.
Alex Shoureas led Gould (5-1) with 22 points, collecting a double-double on the way. Tristan Chamberlain contributed three 3s and 12 points in the victory.
Zach Grover led Buckfield (3-6) with 19 points including four 3s in defeat.
Girls Basketball
Buckfield 34, Kents Hill 32
BUCKFIELD — After being shutout in the first quarter, Buckfield stormed back to win on a layup in the final minute over Kents Hill 34-32 on Wednesday in a Class C South girls basketball contest.
In the final minute, Deja Bennett finished a layup to put Buckfield (1-8) up 33-32, followed by a free throw to make it a two point win. Katy Henderson led Buckfield with 13 points. The Bucks outscored Kents Hill (4-2) 25-16 in the second half.
Jami Hewins led Kents Hill with 10 points in the loss.
