But few industries in Auburn have sprung into existence and grown more rapidly than the W. Bickford Moccasin company, on Washington street. Six years ago the founder of the company was working in the Foss-Packard shoe shop as foreman in the making and lasting rooms but an accident in which he broke his arm caused him to take a vacation. After thinking the matter over Mr. Bickford decided to start a business of his own of some kind and finally settled on the moccasin business. With no previous experience in this fine of work, but with a thorough knowledge of shoemaking in general, he opened a small shop in his 8 by 12 foot garage.

Managers of Lewiston’s downtown stores seemed satisfied with the shopper turnout today — the first day of Winter Dollar Days. Richard Dennis, manager of B. Peck Co., said business was “quite good” and he noted that the “big” crowds are expected tomorrow. “Business has been good today,” was the comment of Lawrence Ward of Ward Bros. Store on Lisbon Street. Miss Beatrice Dumont, office manager at LeBlanc’s Clothing Store, seemed pleased with the number of first-day shoppers, but she added that business at this point was “not quite as good as last year.”

Proposed state budget cuts will have a severe impact on local health and social service agencies — an impact the United Way of Androscoggin County will be unable to alleviate, officials of the local fundraising organization emphasized in a position statement released Monday. “It is our responsibility to inform state policymakers that the United Way of Androscoggin County will be unable to make up the difference in funding if current proposals are enacted,” volunteer Executive Committee and board officers concurred in their written statement.
