AVON — Police are investigating vandalism to the town’s ball field Monday on Avon Valley Road.
Bleachers were overturned and broken, garbage thrown around and the storage building was damaged, according to Wilton Police Chief Heidi Wilcox.
Wilcox was helping Maine State Police cover Franklin County while deputies and officers attended the funeral services for Somerset County Cpl. Eugene Cole, who was killed in the line of duty on April 25.
Wilcox responded to the report of vandalism at 2:45 p.m.
The vandalism occurred Monday between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m., Wilcox wrote in an email Tuesday.
The field is known as the Walli Ballpark-Rollins Playground.
It is currently being used by children ages 4 through 13 for Little League baseball.
“Coach Duke Bachelder told me children have been playing six days a week at the field,” she wrote.
Somebody has volunteered to build more benches, First Selectman Greta Espeaignnette said.
It is very disappointing. It is very disheartening that someone would do that to kids,” she said.
Franklin County sheriff’s deputies are investigatin the vandalism.
If anyone saw anything suspicious or knows anything about the vandalism, they are asked to call the Franklin County Regional Communications Center at 778-6140.
