DIXFIELD – Joe Knowlton’s sophomore class at Dirigo High School took on the DARE Park clean-up and restoration project for their community education/awareness requirement. Louise Chapman has been coordinating the projects for the entire sophomore class.
“The Dirigo students took full leadership in the efforts and were instrumental in the organizing of the materials and tools needed as well as providing the muscle.”
During the clean up, students administered lead tests on painted surfaces, sanded, painted, took pictures and utilized carpentry skills along with the raking and sweeping needs of the park.
Through an ongoing collaborative effort, Kim Sequoia, program manager of the River Valley Healthy Communities One ME initiative, has been meeting with the high school, the Rumford Parks and Recreation, the DARE officers and parents in the neighborhood in each phase of the park restoration project.
Sequoia states “the DARE Park is an important part of our community and with everyone’s involvement, there will be more improvements and events for the park in the future.”
