LEWISTON — The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Maine will sponsor a Lewiston-Auburn Walk for Wishes fund-raiser on Saturday, May 3. The walkers will help lead the annual Maine State Parade.

Walk for Wishes is an annual walk-a-thon fund-raiser sponsored in several Maine locations by the Camden-based charity and various groups of local volunteers. This year’s Lewiston-Auburn event marks the first time that the walk has been organized in the Twin Cities. The walks are also being held in Augusta, Bangor, Ellsworth, Biddeford-Saco, Dennysville and Portland.

Central Maine Medical Center is taking the lead in organizing the Lewiston-Auburn walk and has already begun recruiting a team to participate. The event will coincide with the Maine State Parade. In fact, the Make-A-Wish walkers will help lead the parade.

“We are hoping to enlist area businesses, schools and other organizations to join in this walk along the Maine State Parade route. Funds raised through the walk will help the Make-A-Wish Foundation fulfill its mission of bringing hope, strength and joy to Maine children who are living with life-threatening illnesses,” said Sheila Barnies, CMMC employee who is serving as Walk for Wishes Committee chairwoman for the Lewiston-Auburn area.

The foundation is a nonprofit organization that exists for the sole purpose making the wishes of seriously ill children come true. The organization has granted more than 400 wishes to Maine children.
