Bates pair scores at NCAA Championships

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin — Bates College senior Adedire Fakorede placed fourth in the discuss throw on Thursday at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, winning his third career All-America honor and his first in outdoor competition.

And Katherine Cook concluded a year of stunning performances with perhaps her greatest race, placing second in the 10,000-meter run as the 12th seed on Thursday morning at the NCAA Championships with a time of 35:17.48, 40 second ahead of the third-place finisher.

Fakorede, of Newark, New Jersey, competing in his sixth and final NCAA Championship meet, jumped from 13th place out of 20 men into third place with his third attempt of trials at 173-1.75, thereby reaching the finals and allowing him three more attempts. He becomes the 33rd Bates man to win All-America honors in outdoor Track & Field.

Cook, of South Burlington, Vermont, was the only runner within shouting distance of the event champion (Ithaca’s Taryn Cordani) in claiming her fourth All-America honor this year.

Cook’s past All-America honors were for third place in the 5,000 meters and seventh in the 3,000 at the NCAA Indoor Championships, and 16th place at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in the fall.
