Spruce Mountain High School’s Windstorm Challenge student team take first place at the Kleinschmidt Windstorm Challenge at the University of Maine on May 18 in Orono. The competition requires students to build a wind turbine platform that floats and supports the turbine so it stays vertical without tipping over in waves and wind. The students also had to present a four-minute presentation to a panel of UMO judges. The statewide competition hosted 25 teams. The SMHS team members each won an opportunity for a $20,000 internship at the UMO Advanced Structures Composite Lab. Team members are, from left, mentor Jay Lindsey, Chase Gardner, Scott Jackson, Professor of Engineering at UMO Habib Dagher, Dylan Gould and Levi St. Pierre.
