CARRABASSETT VALLEY — A Massachusetts man and a Maine couple remained hospitalized Monday, a day after their vehicles collided on Routes 27/16, officials said.
A Toyota SUV driven by Andrew Brockelman, 22, of Boxford, Massachusetts, was traveling in the northbound lane and a Mazda driven by Richard Spiess, 75, of Southwest Harbor was traveling southbound, according to information from the Carrabassett Valley Police Department.
“The Toyota crossed the centerline and struck the Mazda head-on,” according to Assistant Police Chief Rick Billian.
Spiess and his wife, Lee Ann, 59, were flown by helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. He was listed in critical condition Monday and she in fair condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Brockelman was in fair condition, a CMMC spokeswoman said.
The accident was reported at 7:03 a.m. Sunday, near Hazel Wood Drive.
The accident remained under investigation Monday.
