AUGUSTA – The deadline for Maine’s 2004 moose permit applications is Thursday, April 1.

Completed applications must be postmarked no later than midnight Thursday, or delivered to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife headquarters in Augusta at 284 State St. by 5 p.m. Thursday, or submitted on-line at www.mefishwildlife.com no later than 11:59 p.m. April 1.

This year, 2,895 permits are available in 19 wildlife management districts statewide, according to Mark Latti, a department spokesman.

That’s 310 more than last year.

Sparking the permit increase was a petition signed by more than 2,700 people last year. It asked the department to lower the moose population in southern and eastern Aroostook County to make the roads safer.

That increase is to be spread through three wildlife districts in The County. Permits there are also to be split more evenly between the two weeks of the moose season.

This year’s season runs from Sept. 27 through Oct. 2 in districts 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 11, and 19, and from Oct. 11 through 16 in districts 1 to 14, 17, 18, 19, 28 and 29.
