MEXICO — It is with great sadness that the family of Eugene Arthur Waugh, 81, of Mexico announces his passing Wednesday, June 27, at his residence, following an extended illness surrounded by his loving family.
Eugene will be fondly remembered by his wife of 60 years, Beverly (Buotte), and his children Debbie (Gary) Hanmer, Bruce (Lisette) Waugh, Judy (Hank) McCarthy and Gena (Ernie) Cloutier. He will also be lovingly remembered by his nine grandchildren, Zachary and Ashley Hanmer, Russell and Derrick Waugh, Hillary, David and Leah McCarthy, Brandyn and Joel Cloutier; many great-grandchildren; and his brothers Kenneth and Wilfred; and sister, Jackie; as well as a loving niece and caregiver, Tammy Waugh.
He was predeceased by his parents, William J. and Obeline (Arsenault) Waugh; his sisters Jeannette Jarry, Edith Gallant; and his granddaughter, Amanda Hanmer.
He was educated in Mexico schools and was a graduate of Mexico High School, Class of 1955. Gene served in the United States Marines and was employed with First National, Food City and Hannaford supermarkets.
He was a communicant of the Parish of the Holy Savior, was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Webb River Sportsman Club and the Rumford-Mexico Horseshoe Club. He was a passionate outdoorsman who enjoyed spending time at camp, hunting, fishing and woodworking.
Eugene was an amazing role model as a husband, father, grandfather and friend. The strength of his heart permeated his smile and touched every person he encountered during his time here. Anyone who had the opportunity of interacting with him has been blessed with the rare opportunity to witness truth, character and holiness in action. He was a man who selflessly gave of himself every time and anytime for anyone. He endeared himself to everyone he touched.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice, specifically his loving caretakers Tammy Bean and Elise Plourde.
