FARMINGTON – Members of the Wilton Fire Department were honored as “Hometown Heroes” Friday at the Unicel store in Farmington for their hard work and dedication to fire service.

During the past year, the members of the Fire Department have raised more than $9,000 toward the purchase of new dress uniforms. The department’s approximately 25 volunteer firefighters committed their free time to raise funds.

“These are the Cadillac of uniforms,” said Fire Chief Sonny Dunham. “The department morale is really good at this point. People see that we’re moving forward to keep up with the times.”

The Fire Department also purchased three top-of-the-line self-contained breathing apparatuses. The new air packs are much lighter than the old ones and allow a firefighter to search a smoke-filled building for up to 30 minutes. In addition, the department purchased 15 sets of fire protection gear – turn-out coats, bunker pants, forestry shirts and goggles.

Unicel presented the Fire Department with a certificate and donated $250 to the department.

The Hometown Heroes program recognizes the efforts of firefighters and emergency personnel throughout Unicel’s Northeast region. Unicel stores in Maine, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont will donate approximately $3,500 to local fire departments as part of its Hometown Heroes program.
