FARMINGTON – A public reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, at the UMF Art Gallery to showcase two exhibits.
There will be a showing of photographs of people and places in Israel and Palestine titled “Images of the Levant: Paired Photographs from Israel and Palestine.” Photographer Skip Schiel traveled through that region last year. His photographs are linked through his written accounts and reflections. He was a member of a delegation sponsored by the Fellowship of Reconciliation, an interfaith, international organization formed in 1914 to seek ways to peace during World War I. Schiel’s photographs bear witness to the individual human lives often obscured by the actions and rhetoric of political authority.
The second showing, “Seeds of Peace: Color Games,” is presented by the Seeds of Peace camp in Otisfield, where each year a diverse group of international middle and high school students participates in athletics, arts and other projects. The students then return to their communities to act as seeds for peace for the future.
The culmination of their experience at camp is the Color Games, a final few days of intense competition and collaboration between campers.
In the summer of 2004, campers from the Middle East, Africa and the United States created colorful murals based on two themes for exhibition at UMF, their visions of home and their life-changing experiences at camp.
The UMF Art Gallery is free and open to the public Tuesday through Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. and by appointment. It is located at 246 Main St. More information may be obtained by calling 778-7001.
The two exhibits will run from Sept. 16 to Oct. 21.
