LITCHFIELD, Conn. (AP) – A man who participated in the group beatings of two strangers in Winsted has been sent to prison for 17 years.
Twenty-year-old Garrett Murning of Avon is the first of five suspects sentenced in the February 2008 incidents, which left both victims critically injured.
Authorities say Murning and his friends randomly attacked the two middle-aged pedestrians as they drove through Winsted, intoxicated and angry that they could not get a hotel room.
All five suspects have pleaded guilty to assault charges and other offenses.
Murning’s half-brother, Christopher Layton, is due for sentencing March 6.
The others are all from Winsted. Nicholas Brewer and Adam Salazar are due for sentencing Jan. 30, and Taylor Dunbar will be sentenced Jan. 16.
